Gwen Yvette – B.S with love

Release date: 28/05/21

On listening to the opening of a three track release from Gwen Yvette ‘Neither of Us’, the lyrics identify immediately with an immersive delve into music made unashamedly for grown folks.  The singer song-writer from South Carolina sings “ It’s sad to think we’re not gonna make it, but it’s got to the point where neither of us can fake it”.  This is traditional RnB stripped back and reminiscent of an illustrious past.  ‘Neither Of Us ‘ is a melancholy ballad about a couple wrestling with neither wanting to be the first to let go.

The Harlem born songstress from St Helena Island duets with Darryl Jordan to great effect on ‘Dirty’, which intertwines with ‘Neither of Us’ and the final single ‘Sorry’.  On Dirty, Gwen appears to be disillusioned and tired, stating “she cannot be dealt another dirty hand”.  Meanwhile Daryl wrestles with “just wanting to be a man” and letting him be.

The first two tracks set us up perfectly for a regretful Gwen Yvette to rue dealing her man a dirty hand on the final single, simply called ‘Sorry’.  Tired and lonely Gwen seeks forgiveness and yearns for a second chance, recognising her own shortcomings along the way which has contributed to her relationship’s demise.  With her ‘big girl’s things on’, I can’t help but hope she receives the second chance which we all deserve as the song lyrically draws us in to the emotive subject.

In a beat driven era, this is bold by Gwen Yvette.  Vocally and lyrically there is much to admire here.  Gwen’s story telling is reminiscent of past greats Shirley Brown and Barbara Mason.  For our younger audience there is a hint of Jennifer Hudson in Gwen’s voice which is high praise indeed, but well deserved in our humble opinion.

‘BS. with love’ will be available through all outlets 28th May 2021.  Like most things of quality, to fully appreciate, listen, put it down and revisit to absorb the quality on offer.  It consists of three separate songs as described above.  Two more singles are expected in the coming weeks (June and August 2021 respectively)  as Gwen Yvette continues her musical journey which will no doubt garner new fans along the way.
